In 1978 accreditation of Christian Science facilities was done by The Mother Church. Today it is done by ‘The Commission For Accreditation Of Christian Science Nursing Organisations/Facilities Inc’.
In 1978 the establishing committee saw the need as threefold:
• An accredited Christian Science nursing facility
• A supportive residential care facility
• Short term rest and study accommodation
Accredited Christian Science nursing facilities are designed to provide temporary nursing accommodation for residents while the healing unfolds. Guidelines for these facilities did not then and do not now allow long term accommodation for residents who do not require full nursing, but who need minimal supportive care in their daily routine.
On investigation the committee realised that the cost of running a Christian Science nursing facility including qualified Christian Science nurses and support staff on duty 24/7 was not financially feasible for the relatively small Christian Science community in Victoria or even in Australasia.
Could a care facility be set up that would be able to provide Christian Science nursing care in times of special need? This is the model that the VWA adopted and has developed over the years since.
The VWA is not eligible for ‘Accreditation’, but with the wonderful work of Christian Science nurses from Victoria, interstate and overseas, and with strong financial support for all nurses by The Victorian Christian Science Nurses’ Support Association Incorporated, it can provide Christian Science nursing when needed.
